New road works in view :
The Cabildo will execute works in the roundabout of the polygon Costa Antigua to relieve traffic
The Island Corporation proposes an urgent solution to the retentions of a stretch of road that exceeds 25,000 vehicles of average daily intensity
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Roads area, will soon start works to reduce traffic congestion that occurs on the FV-2 road in the Airport-Pozo Negro section. Urgent action to improve access to the Costa Antigua industrial estate, which will make it possible to ease the delays before the final solution, which involves the construction by the Canary Islands Government of the North South Axis section between the airport and Pozo Negro, project currently being drafted.
The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, explains that "we cannot wait for the stretch of the North South Axis 'Airport-Pozo Negro' is finished, So from the Cabildo we have sought an urgent solution to alleviate immediately congestions that occur in this stretch of road of regional interest exceeding 25,000 vehicles of average daily intensity".
The technical solution proposed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura consists in the creation of a direct external lane that allows traffic to continue in a south direction without having to cross the roundabout or give way to the vehicle that turns to enter the industrial estate. " This will lead to a solution to a problem that has been aggravating and that will allow an improvement in road safety and traffic jams that occur that generates retention kilometers," adds Minister of Roads, Blas Acosta.
It will do absolutely nothing to help, there are little or no delays coming South, and I repeat myself the problem is caused by Souy=th bound traffic turning into the industrial estate, one roundabout further south next to Ikea
@johnrgby We've never been aware of problems coming south.
Coming NORTH: have seen traffic backed up all the way from Atlantico 😡
Well, wait and see. They seem to have the budget to do the works.
And having a budget for a problem that does not exist will solve a problem 3/400 metres away?Well, wait and see. They seem to have the budget to do the works.
I was talking last night to an Irish guy who while not claiming to be an expert on the subject IMO made a lot of sense, his options were .1. A flyover to allow Southbound traffic wanting to turn left onto the estate to do so without holding up northbound traffic, issues with that cost would be in the millions of euros because you would have to reconfigure the road that runs from Ika up through the estate and it would mean the loss of a lot of parking spaces. .2. drive a road through from The Costa Antigua R/about, reconfigure the existing road that is currently one way to a two-way road, and put another r/about outside the petrol station to allow traffic to turn onto this road without having to use the existing r/about. Thoughts anyone?
Having said that all the work that is going on at the moment seems to be at The Ikea r/about so we shall have to wait and see where they go from there.
They won't build a flyover as they see the long term solution will be the new dual carriageway that will link the airport to Pozo negro. But, how long will that take to come into being?

I have certainly seen delays from as far back as El Matorral centre. Granted not as often as the South to North delays through Caleta. I can see some sense in what they are doing but I can still see it choking the traffic going North and not into the industrial estate.
It is ' Urgent action to improve access to the Costa Antigua industrial estate, which will make it possible to ease the delays before the final solution' or you prefer the original version 😉. One can't say that the situation is the same as 5 yeas ago. Frankly speaking, we have no guts to go to Caleta when we see the S-N traffic at the Costa Antigua roundabout at 10am. Knowing how long it takes here to handle road works, I remain on 'wait and see' but use the money efficienty Mr. the Alcade. 😉
The road at the rear of Lidl/Mercadona is now two way, I came out of Mercadona this morning and saw no signs, until I spotted white arrows on the road pointing up???
I've not read or seen the plans however if they want to tinker with traffic queueing then they could build new dedicated left turn lanes both northbound and southbound with decent stacking length. However a more sustainable way of dissipating the traffic would be to build a new road link connecting the industrial/retail estate to the road/island leading into Costa Antigua. Northbound traffic wanting to access the industrial estate could get off the road sooner relieving the traffic on the Ikea island and visa versa. it would also dissipate the traffic at and around Ikea. it may also provide a slightly interesting alternative route for the bus, instead of doubling back onto the main road it could drop people off safely right in the centre of the estate.
@villan After passing there this morning, I have no doubt they are widening the road Northbound, I will have a look Southbound later this afternoon I can see the possibility of a dedicated right turn for Northbound Traffic, but it will not ease access when Southbound traffic wants to turn left on to the estate, which IMO is what is causing the current Northbound holdups, and now that the road at the rear of Mercadona is two way, a link off The Costa Antigua roundabout directly on to this might help somewhat.
Starting on Sunday night at 10pm, they will be making the new southbound lane. Work is being done at night for a week, to minimise disruption.
On a side issue it was heartbreaking to see so many of the large group of mature palm trees planted 6 months ago near the scrapyard have died. We saw them planted in dreadful “soil” with no nutrients/compost added to the holes. Most of the excavated spoil was rock/sand. They were doomed from the start. I’ve spoken before about trees planted around the resort with poor staking and end up snapping in the wind.
