Antigua promotes the beginning of two main works in El Castillo
Virgen de La Peña Avenue and Picasso Street
• The immediate signing of the reconsideration with the winning company allows the start of the Ring Road, immediately ending the Christmas events.
• Antigua City Council coordinates with the Local Police, municipal technicians and the construction company, the security measures and road signage for the start of works.
The mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña García and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Economy and Finance, Juan Pedro Galván Lasso have witnessed this Monday, January 2, the signing between municipal technicians and construction manager that allows the beginning of the Comprehensive Remodeling of the street Picasso and Virgen de la Peña Avenue.
Having achieved the objective of bidding and awarding before the end of 2022, that is, adds the municipal councilor, guaranteed financing of more than 7 million euros in these two projects, we are now promoting the measures to start the works as soon as possible.
Both projects are carried out in parallel with an execution time of 8 months, making it possible to take advantage of resources and minimizing the resulting disturbances in road traffic.
In this sense, the mayor has coordinated with the Local Police, municipal technicians and works director, the road signs warning of the start of works in each of the sections, the installation of security fences limiting the different areas of action and the required lighting.
As of this week, signage and road safety measures are being carried out, to begin the execution of the works after the end of the Christmas events, avoiding the current season of greatest traffic of residents or tourists.
It is not possible to avoid the inconvenience caused by a work of this magnitude, concludes Matías Peña, but we can minimize the inconveniences and maximize the final results of an embellished Ring Road, which will provide greater traffic safety, and more accessible and comfortable on streets with new paving and better lighting.
I am failing to see why this is necessary, or even if it will achieve the stated outcome, which if I recall is to reduce the speed at which vehicles travel up and down the hill, and yes I agree some vehicles do travel too fast on this stretch, so is the intention to make what is now a single carriageway in both directions, into a dual carriageway, or a single carriageway ring?
The information I saw last Summer indicated that they were doing away with the central reservation and putting in a cycle lane.
There was a lot of protest about losing the palm trees so I don't know if plans have been changed.
How many will use the cycle lane? Obviously the powers that be have never tried to cycle up the hill!
I am sure when wed rove past yesterday morning they were planting new flowers on the central reservation???? if it is being removed why, or is it right hand/left hand?
Someone I know has been to the Town Hall to make inquiries about the start date of this project,as they have put up signs restricting parking, however they have no idea of the start date as yet, but have put up the sins anyway, so when they are ready to start there will be no vehicles obstructing the work 🤔 🤔 they have however numbered the palm trees going up the hill there were two people on Fridaycarrying out this ardous task, I think the one opposite El Perro loco is number 91 😀
They have made a start, well Thursday morning they started erecting fencing opposite the market, Calle Virgen de La Pena and you can no longer make a left turn into there it is now one way and you have to go up the hill to gain access
I can't imagine how it's all going to be done at the same time, given the track record of previous street 'improvements'.
I can't imagine how it's all going to be done at the same time, given the track record of previous street 'improvements'.
it is already causing chaos, almost every time I pass there is traffic going around the island to try to turn left, if you are coming down the hill it is fairly obvious, but coming up there is no signs whatsoever until you have gone halfway around and you see the fencing and a no entry sign 🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔
As of 11:00 this morning they have managed to remove circa 25 metres of tarmac 🤔 considering they were supposed to start 15 days ago with a completion in September, at the present rate of progress, they are going to be fortunate to complete the Calle Virgen de La Pena section by September.
Did we expect anything else, John?
Please keep us updated. Thanks.
😀 😀 😀 no not really, I was in the Pero Loco last evening, and the increase in traffic coming up the hill quite surprised me.
I have passes there twice today, at 09:00 and again at 13:15, there is a van on the site but no sign of anyone or of anything happeniong.
We are now 39 days in, I passed twice yesterday, at 10:00 and 16:00 two machines on site bur no sign of anyone here to operate them, they have now skimmed the tarmac off about 120 mters, and have dug a hole around 2 mtres deep in one section, so no great progress I have posted 3 photos in the gallery which will give some idea of the progress { or lack of 🤔 }
It's just what we expected, John. 🙄
Thanks for the photos. I found 2 of them and I've put them in the Work In Progress 2023 album in the Photo Gallery.
